Everyday care
Dust your idol gently with a soft, dry cloth every few days to prevent dust buildup in the fine detailing. Keep it in a dry spot, away from direct exposure to incense smoke and moisture where possible, as both can accelerate tarnishing.
Deep cleaning
For a deeper clean, a natural method using diluted tamarind pulp, or a traditional brass-cleaning powder such as pitambari, works well — apply gently with a soft cloth, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive scrubbing pads, which can wear down fine relief work over time.
Using soap and water
Mild soap and warm water can be used for a quick wash, but always dry the idol immediately and completely with a soft cloth afterward — leftover moisture in crevices is one of the most common causes of tarnishing.
Panchalogam idols
Panchalogam idols (made from a traditional five-metal alloy) generally follow the same care routine as brass — gentle dusting, occasional natural cleaning, and a dry storage spot.
